Sony makes great multimedia laptops, and produces one of only a handful of high-end product lines that can compete with Apple in design and marketing savvy. Sony's support sites are clean and easy to navigate, but upgrades can be a bit steep, running $249 for a three-year mail-in plan, or $399 for a three-year plan that includes accidental damage protection.

Support is accessible 24-7 via a toll-free phone line, an online knowledge base, and a Web site with driver downloads. The Sony Vaio S is backed by an industry-standard one-year mail-in warranty. The Vaio S is thin and light, so looking for some extra battery time for on-the-go use isn't out of the question. A MacBook Pro can run 2 hours or more longer, while a specialized gaming laptop may only run 2 hours total, or even less. That's acceptable, but not especially impressive. The Vaio S landed right in the middle of the pack, running for 4 hours and 31 minutes in our video playback battery drain test. Midsize laptops can run the gamut from disappointing battery life to outstanding, because of the wide variety of prices, components, and battery capacities available. Vaio laptops always have excellent screen quality, and in this case, images and videos were clear and bright, and off-axis viewing was impressive, even looking down from above.

The 15.5-inch display has a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels, which is perfectly suited for Blu-ray and 1080p HD video. Now, it switches between a low-power and high-power mode, with the Nvidia GPU simply disabled in the lower setting, along with adjustments to screen brightness. It used to turn a Vaio laptop's discrete graphics off and on, before Nvidia developed a way to switch between GPUs on the fly. One odd holdout from an earlier era remains, the physical Speed/Stamina switch above the keyboard. I generally like click pads, but this setup (from Synaptics) felt twitchy and sometimes failed to register taps and movement, no matter how I set the sensitivity options. Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and others already use this style, which has a click zone in the lower left and right corners and two-finger scrolling for vertical navigation. The large touch pad has a pleasing matte surface and, in a big change from last year's version, the traditional left and right mouse buttons have been eliminated, leaving you with what we now call a click pad.
